Dak Lak: Wild elephants destroy fields, threaten locals

In Ia Lop valley, people mainly live by planting wet rice, corn and fruit trees. In recent days, wild elephants have destroyed the fields of many families. Elephant footprints are dense in the fields. The largest footprints are nearly 0.5m in depth and 40-45cm in diameter.

“We invested more than VND3 million in 1.2ha of rice but those elephants destroyed our field totally. We’ve lost everything!” said a woman in Ia Lop. Many families here are in the same situation.

The elephants have not only destroyed crops but also pulled down many field watch-towers of local farmers.

Local residents have reported the situation to local authorities but they haven’t come up with an effective measure to ward off the elephants yet.

Vi Van Binh, Chairman of Ia Lop commune, said that sometimes wild elephants ‘visited’ his commune but this time they were very cruel. The local government has told locals to not hurt this rare species of animal.
